A Goofy Movie Review
To celebrate 30 years of this classic film from the 90s, here is my review of A Goofy Movie. I want to say I love this film; it's funny, and the music, like Stand Out and Eye to Eye, is fantastic and not forgettable.
The film focuses on Goofy and his son Max, and it's a father-and-son story about how Max grows up. Goofy wants to make sure Max is good and wants to be part of his son's life. So Goofy takes Max on a road trip for the summer, which Max doesn't like because he is supposed to go out with Roxanne, a girl from his school with whom he's in love. So he lies to her that he's going to see Powerline in LA, and Max is now focused on going to LA and seeing Powerline in concert. Max, of course, feels terrible about lying to her, and Goofy even tells him in the end that he needs to be honest with her, and if she doesn't like him anymore, maybe she's not the girl for him. These are wise words because there are always more fish in the sea.
We all had a high school crush.
The film also has some very funny and heartfelt moments that show what it's like being a teenager and being embarrassed by your parents. Your parents want to ensure you're all right and don't end up in the...
In the Electric Chair!
The film has funny characters and characters we all know, like PJ, Max's best friend, and Bobby, one of the funniest characters in the movie and clearly grows up to be a big stoner. The film also features Pete, who is not a villain but still acts like a better father than Goofy because he believes a father should be his kid under his thumb, but Goofy doesn't think that. Until he learns that Max has been secreting, leading them to LA.
This is a scene where you see Goofy so pissed off it's funny and has become a meme. Goofy is the nicest cartoon character, and to him, this pissed is funny. However, it's one of the best scenes in the film because when Max has Goofy turn left, it means Max doesn't care about the big fishing trip. The two have an argument while trying to catch their car. One of the most heartbreaking scenes is when Max tells him he's got his own life, and Goofy knows that but wants to be part of it. It's a scene that hit hard because it shows that parents still want to be part of their kid's lives. Even after they grow up and go to college or start a career or a family, they still want to be part of it.
Ultimately, the two recognize, and Max saves Goofy from falling down a waterfall with the perfect cast.
They make it to the concert and manage to perform with Powerline. It's funny that most of the time, when a fan gets on a stage, security immediately takes them away, but not in this film.
Also, the Powerline songs I mentioned are great, like Stand Out and Eye to Eye; they get stuck in your head. The film ends with Max telling Roxanne that he never knew Powerline and just wanted her to like him, but she reveals she always liked him. She ends up meeting Goofy in a very Goofy way.
That is so Goofy.
I also liked the Mickey and Donald cameos. They were funny and made you think about what they were up to in the film.
Likely going to see Powerline.
I found it funny when Goofy tells Max he's going on a fishing trip with his best buddy, and he says, "Oh, Donald Duck." It would have been funny if he had said, "Oh no, he and Mickey are on a trip to LA to see a concert." Something like that would have been funny.
A Goofy Movie still holds up 30 years later, and it's still a fun movie to watch.
This movie is a feel-good, classic Disney film, and I give it an 8 out of 10. Happy 30 years of this Disney classic.
