My Review of Peter Pan.
To celebrate Disney's Peter Pan 70th anniversary, this is my review of Peter Pan. As a kid, I loved this film and always watched it with my sisters. The story was about Peter Pan, a boy who didn't want to grow up, and he lives in Neverland with the Lost Boys. They have adventures and fight Captain Hook and his pirates.
He goes to the Darling's house to listen to Wendy's stories, and one night, he forgets his shadow.
That's when he meets Wendy, John, and Michael. Their exciting adventure begins. One of the film's best moments is when the song you can fly plays, and you see Peter and the Darlings flying across London. "Second Star to the right and straight on to Morning."
The film is also about Wendy, and her brothers, for their father wants Wendy out of the nursery room because she has to grow up. The film does address the topic of growing up as a child because, let's face it, we all grow up. That's life. In fact, Peter himself in the film does some growing up, too, because he realizes how ignorant he was towards Wendy, John, Michael, and the lost boys when they decide to leave Neverland. But ultimately, he sets things right like a man and saves everyone from Captain Hook.
Let's face it Peter Pan may be the hero, but in other adaptions, the character has been betrayed as the villain, or he's a jerk. In Once Upon A Time, he's the villain in one season. The character of Peter Pan has his faults, but he grows and learns from them.
The film has Tinker Bell, Peter's fairy, whose a bitch at first because she hates Wendy. You know she's the jealous type. It's funny how Tinker got spin-off movies, and they made her more likable. I've seen that Tinker Bell's worried Peter is replacing her with Wendy, but he's not. He loves Tinker Bell, and in the film, Tinker Bell realizes her jealousy, in the end, is what almost led to Captain Hook killing Peter. Finally, Tinker Bell redeems herself and even becomes friends with Wendy.
The Lost Boys are some of the best characters in the film. Peter wants them to have a mother and believes Wendy is the right mom. When Wendy tells them what a mother really is, the boys want to be adopted by the Darlings. However, unlike the original, where the Lost Boys go live with Wendy. In the Disney film. They decide to stay with Peter because they don't want him alone. I actually like that ending more because it shows the Lost Boys look up to Peter as a big brother in their lives.
The film's big bad is that stinker Captain Hook. Captain Hook has become one of Disney's most iconic villains. He's both funny and intimidating at the same time. So it's weird in future adaptions of Peter Pan. They make Captain Hook the good guy and Peter Pan the bad guy. Look at Once Upon A Time. They made Hook a fan favorite and love interest of Emma. I also found he and Mr. Smee were funny together. It's also funny when the crocodile comes to eat Captain Hook, all because Peter cut off his hand and fed it to the crocodile. Captain Hook always freaks out and calls for Smee to protect him from the crocodile.
No matter what, Smee always finds a way to hurt Hook.
Yet, despite all that, Smee is always there for Hook.
I know Disney has announced a live-action remake. The remake will make up for the racism of the old film, and they want to portray Indigenous people in a more culturally appropriate light. Which is fine. I support what they are doing because they are remaking Peter Pan not just for money but also to portray Indigenous people in a more positive light.
That's why Tiger Lilly will play a more significant role in the remake.
Speaking of, here are my thoughts on the live-action remake.
The remake will be called Peter Pan and Wendy. I can't stand live-action remakes, so I think this will suck. I know the film changed the lost boys to the lost kids, and I wouldn't be shocked if it's Wendy who defeats Captain Hook instead of Peter Pan. Unfortunately, the poster is giving it away that she will be the one who defeats Hook.
The director of the film is David Lowery. He made Green Knight and Pete's Dragon, which could be a good movie. However, I'm just sick of these remakes after Pinocchio.
Overall, I still love this film and the song You Can Fly. It's a good song, and the voice acting in this film is excellent. Everyone did a great job, and the animation of this film was fantastic. Peter Pan is still on my list of favorite Disney films. It's hard to believe it's 70 years old.
I give this film a 7 out of 10.
Now to anyone who's seen Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers.
Peter Pan mentions he was fired from Disney after he got older.
This was a reference to what happened to actor Bobby Driscoll.
Walt Disney once said Bobby was the son he never had and kicked him out because he was getting older.
Bobby was the voice of Peter Pan, and he did other movies, like Treasure Island and So Dear to my Heart. He was let go by Disney after Peter Pan. Sadly, like most former child stars, they ended up doing drugs, adult films, or dead. Sadly, Bobby died in 1968 alone in a building and was buried on Hart Island in New York, where they buried the homeless. Bobby's story is a sorrowful tale, and I think the Chip and Dale movie called out Disney for how they treated this guy. It's their fault he's dead, but let's face it, the movie industry is harsh.
I'm shocked Disney hasn't named Bobby a Disney Legend yet. He should be named a Disney Legend after everything that happened to him. He should get a happy ending to his story.
At least Bobby was survived by his three children. There's a documentary about him called Lost Boy; I recommend watching it. Let me tell if you have kids, and they want to be actors, wait till they get older and let them have a childhood. If they want to act, just have them perform in school plays and look into other career ideas.
I dedicate this review to Bobby Driscoll, aka Peter Pan. He deserved better, but his work as Peter Pan will live on forever.
