My review of Madame Web
So, I finally saw Madame Web, and here's my review of it. It was bad. It was like one of the Sony live-action Spider-verse films yet. Moribus is much worse, but this film was boring. This movie had some of the worst acting. The story was poorly written, and I couldn't get into it.
The film is an origin story for Madame Web, and they change her origin. Like in the comics, she's blind and disabled from an accident, and her husband builds her a machine so she can travel through realities and see the future. I found the scenes in the film where her visions got confusing at some scenes and there were moments were I got bored.
Stan Lee's wife voiced Madame Web.
We all know Madame Web from the Spider-Man animated series. That was better. Also, Dakota Johnson was not good in this film, and I found it weird that at the baby shower, she talked about her mother dying from childbirth. That's something you don't bring up at a baby shower. Also Ben and Cassie's friendship was all right in the film.
The rest of the cast are all talented actors. It's just that the characters were boring, like the three actresses who play Julie, Mattie, and Anya. They are good, but their characters could be better written. The comic version of the characters are better written. I'm just glad Isabela Merced has a better superhero role coming up in Superman as Hawkgirl, and she will have an extensive DCU career with that than this; Sydney Sweeney is already doing good as she will star in the Barbella remake directed by Edger Wright. I hope Celeste O'Connor gets more roles in the future because she was great in Ghostbusters Afterlife.
In the film, these three will kill the villain, Ezekiel, and he wants to kill them before they can. So now Cassie, aka Madame Web, has to protect them from him.
Also, these three wear their costumes only at the film's end and in a vision. That's dumb; it's a superhero film, after all. Also, these three don't look like they are in high school, and I find Dakota Johnson didn't do a good job as Madame Web. Dakota Johnson herself didn't like this movie either.
Why does Madame Web leave all three girls in the woods while she studies the spider mythos? I mean, come on. Take them somewhere safer, and like earlier why not have Ben help them.
Now, Adam Scott plays Uncle Ben, and he is a weird choice like he wasn't bad. It's weird seeing him as Uncle Ben. This is the first time we have seen Uncle Ben on the big screen since Amazing Spider-Man. I think they could have done better with the character.
Also, this film had a lot of 2000 nostalgia, and Ezekiel's costume is something out of the Boys. It doesn't look good.
Now, the film's villain is Ezekiel Sims. He killed Cassie's mom and stole a rare spider that gave him spider powers. Cassie's mom led a group of scientist to study a rare breed of healing factor spiders.
Also, I hate how they change the With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility to When you take Responsibility, you will gain powerful abilities. That sounds lame.
He's trying to kill Julie, Anya, and Mattie because they will kill him in the future because he can see the future too. He's hunting them down, and the lamest way this character dies is when he gets crushed by a Pepsi stand. I thought that was lamest way to kill a villain. It might be funny to some but it's still lame.
I've read the Book of Ezekiel from J. Michael's run on Amazing Spider-Man. It was a good story about Peter meeting Ezekiel, a man with spider powers like Peter. Ezekiel got his powers from the spider god in a Peru temple. He became Peter's mentor but eventually went crazy and tried to sacrifice him. However, he had a change of heart as he grew to care for Peter like a son. They did the character dirty in this film. Ezekiel would work better in a Spider-Man movie because he is another mentor in Peter's life, except he tries to kill him for a Spider god.
There were some funny moments, but they didn't save the film. The scene with Cassie and her mom is a good scene, though.
Also, the ending of the film was like, okay, so Peter Parker was born, and they used a scene from the first Spider-Man film, 2002. Cassie does become blind and disabled. Julie, Mattie, and Anya become Spider-Women and protect New York. Still, this film was bland and bad.
This is a bad superhero film, and I hate to say it, but Ant-Man 3 is a better film. I called that film the Batman and Robin of Marvel films, but this is on the same level with Morbius.
Overall, the film's cast are good actors; hopefully, they will get better roles. Well, two of them have it big right now. As Sydney Sweeney said on SNL
"Hopefully you know me from, Anyone But You and not Madame Web."
I give this movie a 3 out of 10. This film is up there with Morbius because I was bored with it. Like all Sony Live-Action Spider-Universe films, you don't have Spidey or a good ten-year plan.
Watch How it should have Ended Madame Web it's really funny.
Originally, there were plans to make a Silk TV series, but after Madame Web, they tried to rewrite it. However, Sony canceled the project in the end. Now, I do want to see a good Spider-Woman movie or TV series in the future. Theres lot of great stories to tell and here are three character would great adaptions.
I would love to see a Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman movie in the future. It could be set in the MCU, and we could include the HYDRA from SHIELD origin for the character. Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman movie would be fantastic to do but set in the MCU so we can get a proper New Avengers film.
I would love to see a Mayday Parker/Spider-Girl movie happen, too. It could work in Tobey's Universe or Andrew Garfield's universe. It could be about May continuing her father's work and protecting New York. It would be a good coming-of-age story for Mayday Parker as Spider-Girl.
Also, I would love to see Spider-Gwen adapted on screen, and rumor has it that Sony is planning to make a movie about Spider-Gwen because of how popular the character is in the Spider-Verse films. I totally can see it happening.
They just need to find good writers and directors and make a great film that we can all enjoy.
I would love to these Spider-Women get a big screen adaption or small screen.
Now, I have to be honest. Sony's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe could be better. I know some people love the Venom films and are excited about the third one. Still, Morbius, Madame Web, and even the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie looks like garbage. He's not a hunter in this film they recon his character. They don't have an idea on what they are doing.
They are planning this out horribly and don't have a Spider-Man despite being called Sony's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. It's not Tom, Tobey, or Andrew well some say it is actually Andrew but who knows it could be Miles, Ben Reily, or Kaine Parker.
The Spider-Verse films are way better because they have a plan and writers who love Spider-Man. They should get them to handle more of the live-action projects, which what they are doing because Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be involved in more future projects because they get Spider-Man. I am excited about the upcoming Spider-Man Noir series with Nicholas Cage.
This could be a good show. I would love to see Kaine Parker/Scarlet Spider and Spider-Man 2099 get adaptions.
These would make awesome, more mature Spider-Man series for older audiences.
Check out my Fan Cast and Ideas for these two characters.
Sony has announced that they are making a Miles Morales Spider-Man film, which I like, but Miles is hard to adapt to on screen. Not in animated form but live-action because I've discussed how Miles should be adapted. Either he's in the MCU, Maguire's Universe, or Garfield's Universe, or he is the Spider-Man of this Universe. We shall see what they do.
Still, Sony needs to just make good films and have Spider-Man in them because characters like Moribus, Madame Web, and Kraven don't work. They need a better idea or just do stuff fans want to see.
