My Review of Space Jam.
Space Jam was a '90s classic that I watched a lot when I was a kid, and this movie is the reason Basketball is my favourite sport. Space Jam was actually inspired by the Nike promotion in which Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny sold Nike shoes. So decided to make a film about it. Now, Space Jam is a film about Michael Jordan playing himself, how he gave up Basketball to become a Baseball player (which he did in real life), and how he wasn't good until he came back to Basketball.
Fun Fact: Chuck Jones, the creator of Bugs Bunny, didn't like this movie because he said his Bugs Bunny could have defeated the Monstars all on his own. He's not wrong. Bugs Bunny has taken on many bigger people than him, and he's come out on top.
In the film, the Monstars threaten to take Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes back to their home planet to serve as entertainment for their boss, Swackhammer (voiced by Danny Devito).
So they challenge them to a basketball game, which they think will be easy, but the Monstars steal the talents of each NBA all-star. So they come out being powerful, and the Looney Tunes need help. So they get Michael Jordan to join the team.
In the film, we are also introduced to Lola Bunny, who, as we all know, was one of the main causes of furries. She's a skilled basketball player who hates being called a doll and is Bugs' love interest in the film. I'll be honest, I like Lola, but I like the Kristen Wig version the best.
Honestly, this was the Lola we should have gotten in the Space Jam Legacy film, not that Zendaya version.
Check out Fan Scripts, What if Lola was Funny, and let me tell ya, Kristen Wigg is the best version of Lola.
Now, in the film, there are some funny moments that made me laugh as a kid, like the Looney Tunes, and the cast did a good job, too. Like Michael Jordan, he's not an actor, but he was good at it. Also, Wayne Knight, Danny Devito, Bill Murray, Theresa Randle, and Billy West as Bugs Bunny. Also, the soundtrack of Space Jam was great, especially Seal's Fly Like An Eagle, For You, Space Jam, and I Believe I Can Fly...It's hard to enjoy that song knowing what a scumbag R Kelly is.
The team plays the Monstars, struggles at first, but improves after Bugs gives them Michael's Secret Stuff, which is just water. However, it helps the Looney Tunes during the game.
I think Lola liked the buffed Bugs a little too much during this scene.
Now the team starts playing better, but during the last period, Mr. Swackhammer makes a deal with Michael: if he wins, Michael goes to his home planet and is forced to sign autographs and play basketball, but he will always lose. If they loose they never bother the Looney Tunes again.
Now, during this, Bill Murray comes in and saves the day. The team is at the last minute, and Michael unleashes his inner Tune.
The Looney Tunes and the Monstars send Mr. Swackhammer flying in a rocket to the moon. They also return the talent to all-star players. The film ends with Michael returning the basketball, and all is right with the world.
Space Jam is still one of those films from childhood that I still enjoy watching, like it's very nostalgic for me because it's the reason I love Basketball. I give Space Jam a 7 out of 10.
Also recommend watching The Last Dance documentary on Netflix about Michael Jordan it's really good.
Fun Fact: Their original plans for Space Jam 2 included Michael Jordan's return, but he declined, preferring to focus on basketball, saying he wasn't an actor. The original plot had the Looney Tunes kicked out of their world, forced to live in the real world until they agree to another basketball game to win back their world. As well, there were some rewrites like a Space Jam with Tiger Woods or Tony Hawk, but they never happened; instead, we got that awful LeBron James film. Makes you think did we really need another Space Jam film it was fine just being a 90s classic.
