My Disney Renaissance Movies Review

Disney Renaissance Movie Reviews

Now we all love Disney films especially the ones from the 90s. The Renaissance era was the best era of Disney animated films great 2D animation, memorable songs, beloved character we've grown with over years, and more importantly it's our childhood.

Here are my reviews of Disney Renaissance films.

Let's do this review in proper order.

First the one that started it all

10. The Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid is a film that I don't really don't care for that much anymore. Don't get me wrong Little Mermaid was the film that started it all but looking back at it now I'm not too big on it. I know people who love Little Mermaid and if you love it that's cool. As for me looking back at it, I just think it's okay but will the say the animation is really good and the voice acting is really good too. The characters in the film are very funny and well written like Sebastian he is one of the best characters in the film. However, Ariel now as a kid I had a crush on her but as I got older looking at her now she doesn't learn anything in the end she gets what she wanted. Hell, in the original book she learn a lesson after she killed herself and if you play Kingdom Hearts 2 she actually learns a lesson.
The voice cast all did a great job like Jodi Benson as Ariel, she was fantastic and I will Ursula was a scary villain like she scared me as a kid.
Overall Little Mermaid is a classic but looking at now it's good but it's not my type of film.
I give Little Mermaid 6 out of 10.

9. Rescuers Down Under.
Now what can I tell ya about Rescuers Down Under this a film I really do enjoy this film watching. I really like this one more than the original film because the animation is better and it feels more epic. I also love John Candy as the voice of Wilbur I think he was the funniest character in the whole film. The villain of the film was really good too as well the rest of film I was at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen. This film also is the reason Disney stopped making theatrical sequels to their works only direct to dvd sequels but that all change in 2018 and 2019 with Wreck It Ralph 2 and Frozen 2 though. Overall this a fun film a lot better than the first in my opinion I give this film a 7 out of 10.

8. Beauty and The Beast
Tale as Old as Time Beauty and the Beast, now I really do love this film it's part of my childhood with such great characters, great music, beautiful animation, and the story is good too. The film's characters Belle and The Beast are great characters and the supporting cast are great too like Lumaire is my favourite character along with Cogsworth like I wish they got a series together but that will sadly never happen RIP Jerry Orbach and David Ogden Stiers they were talent guys. The villain in the film Gaston he is one of the best villains because he would be the hero of film like he would save the day in the end but nah, he's the villain who wants Belle no matter what even though are three women who madly in love with him. Why doesn't just. go with them. It was pointed this film does have few issues I understand those issues they don't tell you how long it's been since Belle's been in the castle it could be just a couple days maybe a month who knows. The live action revealed she was there for three days because of magical enchainment that's why I can't stand those live action remakes (Not Cinderella and Jungle Book though they were great.)
Overall I enjoy this film it's part of my childhood I also love that Beast VS Wolves scene that was an epic as well as that climax between Beast and Gaston. The ending of the film is really heartwarming too.
I give Beauty and the Beast a 8 out of 10.
Fun Fact I got to meet Pagie O'Hara and Robby Benson they were really nice people.

7. Aladdin
What can I say about this film I love this film it is one of my favourite films out of the renaissances era. I mean the animation is great, the characters are amazing, and the music is spectacular. This movie has been part of my childhood for years and I love everything about it especially Robin Williams as the Genie it still feels weird that he is no longer with us because he was the best part of the film. The rest of the characters are amazing like Aladdin is a great protagonist you can relate to him too and Jasmine is wonderful character too, plus Jafar is a great villain as well that epic fight between Aladdin and Jafar's snake form was awesome. Iago was really funny I loved how they redeemed him in the sequels. I really do love this film it's amazing and a childhood classic. It makes me sad too because it makes me miss Robin Williams because he will always be the Genie.
I give Aladdin 9 out of 10.

 6. The Lion King
What can be said about this amazing film it is one of the best Disney films out there. It's such a classic until Disney came out with that live action remake crap. The film's animation is beautiful and breathtaking, the story is amazing taking inspiration from Hamlet, the characters in the film are memorable and very well written. The film has great messages like we all have to face our past and it can hurt, but we can learn from it. This film also had a great voice cast and great songs too like Hakuna Matata, Be Prepared, The Circle of Life, and Can You Feel The Love Tonight. Great songs that I still listen too. The characters in the film Simba, Nala, Timmon, Pumma, Zazu, Mufasa, Sibera, and Scar who is one of the best Disney Villains are all amazing characters. I love this film this is one of my favourite Disney films and makes me cry especially when Mufasa dies.
I give Lion King 10 of 10.
I seriously don't understand why Disney had to do a live action remake?
The animals don't even have emotional expressions!

5. Pocahontas
Pocahontas I know many consider this film to be the weakest film of the renaissance but to me in my opinion I actually enjoy this film. My older sister loves this film and I personally like it I know it has problems but I really do enjoy this film like Pocahontas is a great character even though in real life Pocahontas had a tragic story but this film gives it a more bitter sweet ending. I feel like the story is good but there could have been more done, I like the characters of the this film because I feel for them, the villain I feel is really weak because he's just a greedy villain nothing interesting about him, I think the love story is really good, and the songs are actually really good too. Also the voice cast does a great job like Irene Bedard as Pocahontas, Mel Gibson as John Smith, Christain Bale as Thomas (Yeah Christain Bale aka Batman voiced Thomas.) David Oghden Stiers as Radcliffe, Russell Means as Chief Powhatan, Billy Connolly as Ben and Joe, and Linda Hunt as Grandmother Willow all did a great job.

Interesting fact John Candy was going to voice a character called Red Feather but he sadly passed away before recording his voice in fact the animals were going to talk but after he died they cancelled the idea.

Overall I like Pocahontas despite it's faults I give it a 7 out of 10. I do like this film and I think Pocahontas is a great protagonist and I like her more than the Little Mermaid.

4. The Hunchback of Norte Dame

The Bells of Norte Dame!!! Hunchback of Notre Dame is the darkest Disney film of the renaissance era. Like this film's opening is pretty dark and Frollo he is one of the most evil Disney villains. This film I really do enjoy like I find this film entertaining to watch and it's a really dark film to watch and really do feel sad for Quasimodo because all he wants to do is be accepted by society. That's the one thing they kept from Victor Hugo's work in the film because everything else is sad especially the ending. The film's message is we shouldn't judge someone for their appearance but by their character. Now I understand why some Victor Hugo fans don't like this film but I do like this film a lot. I think the characters are good, I find the songs very entertaining to listen too especially Hellfire like wow that song is so dark and grim, and I think the animation of this film is really good too. I think Frollo is a great villain in the film he's really evil believing everything he does is what God wants him to do. I find Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Phoebus to be great characters in the film and they are very likeable characters even the gargoyles Victor, Hugo, and Laverne are likeable characters too (Fun Fact, the Gargoyles were named after Victor Hugo and his wife Laverne.) but in truth I feel like they should have just been imaginary to Quasimodo like I don't think they needed to help in the final battle in the end of the film.
Overall I do enjoy this film I know the film has some problems with it but I enjoy it none the less. I give this film a 7 out of 10.
Photo I took when I went to France in 2012 you can't help but sing the bells of Norte Dame when see it in person.

3. Hercules
I love this film, like this is one of my favourite Disney films like it's such a fun film. Like I really enjoy this film a lot the music is good, the animation is really good, and the characters are great too. To be honest I actually was routing for Hades I mean he is one of the best characters in the film and you actually feel for him more than Hercules. I think Hercules is a good character but I like Hades more also love Phil played by the always amazing Danny Devito. Also I do love Meg she is one of the best characters in the films and if you think about it she is the real hero of the film not Hercules. Let me explain, that's because she sacrificed her life to save Hercules near the end if you think about it Meg represents what a true hero is and that makes Hercules realized that a Hero is not measured by his strength but by the strength of his heart. Meg represents what a true hero plus she is so cool why isn't she a Disney princess? I mean she's such an amazing character. Hercules himself is still really good character like you feel for him because he just wants people to accept him but they fear him because of his god like strength. I also like the workout montage he has in the film too and I do think Hercules get some great character development.
I love this film it's so much fun to watch and it's a feel good film too. The action in this film is really good too like Hercules fighting the Hydra that was really cool fight scene with some really good animation.
I really do love this film I give it a 9 out of 10.
Seriously can't help but love this guy like I actually was routing for him.

2. Mulan
Ah Mulan, another great film from the 90s. Mulan is such a great film to watch, with good characters and great story based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan. The songs in this film are very entertaining to listen to especially Make A Man Out of You I listen to that when I work out. I really love the character of Mulan I think she's an amazing protagonist and unlike the other Diseny princesses she saved an entire nation from being conquered. I love Mushu he is one of the funniest characters in the film played by Eddie Murphy. The other characters like Shang he's one of the coolest characters in the film and when his dad dies you do feel for him a lot. His romance with Mulan is really good like the two don't kiss in the end but they show their feelings to each other in the end when Mulan asks Shang to stay for dinner. Ling, Chien Po, and Yao are funny characters like I think Yao, Ling, and Chien Po should get a tv series like that would be funny show to watch. I love the battles in this film it was really intense and very entertaining to watch as well. The other characters are great too This film is amazing and it is worth watching again but please don't watch Mulan 2 that film is awful.
I give Mulan an 9 out of 10.
I really hope that live action remake doesn't screw it up.

1. Tarzan
Now we come to the last Renaissance film, the one ended it all Tarzan. I love Tarzan it's one of my favourite Disney films and it ended the renaissance era. What I love most about Tarzan was the Phil Collins songs like Two Worlds, You'll be in my Heart, Son of Man, and Strangers Like Me. The animation and the way that Tarzan surfs on those trees and vines is really cool but to be honest in real life he would have a huge amount of splinters on his feet plus he would have had bad teeth and a beard too. But besides all that this film is very entertaining to watch like Tarzan is a great character and he's really cool too, Jane is a great character very smart and very likeable, Turk and Tantor are really funny characters, Kala was great too voiced Glenn Close, and Kerchak at first you don't like him but he later grows on you. The villain Clayton though he could have been better written I feel because he's just a greedy villain who wants make money off of selling apes and killing apes. Now don't get me wrong I don't like the idea of hunting exotic animals or stuffing them or forcing them to live in cages that's all wrong in my eyes.
I still really enjoy this film the story is really good and the film does bring tears in my eyes like when Tarzan tells Kala that no matter where he goes she will always be his mother its a very touching scene. This film also has a message of two different worlds but one family and we see that with Kerchak who finally accepts Tarzan as his son before he dies and names him the new leader of the tribe of apes. It's really emotional scene but it's always important to accept people for who they are.
I give Tarzan an 8 out of 10.

So that's my review of the Disney Renaissance these films are still entertaining to watch and very nostalgic. Now of course when we get older we do see these films they have plot holes and moments that don't make sense but it won't change the fact we love these movies still.

(Google Image)
Even though Disney has already remade four of the Renaissance films and are planning to remake two more of these films. When will Disney realize were getting sick of these remakes we just want something more original like if Disney wants to remake movies that didn't do well with critics, or didn't have enough story or character development or were box office failures. Just remake those films or better yet just give us something new and original.

Still getting back to point this was my favourite era of Disney films I love these films I grew up with these movies. If I ever become a dad I will definitely show these films to my kids. So that's my review of the Disney Renaissance films let me know what you think leave a comment and what was favourite era of Disney films. I hope one day Disney will go back to its old roots and make great and original films like these ones. Here's hoping.
