Why am I concerned about Brave and the Bold?
So recently, it was announced that screenwriter Christina Hodson will write the film adaptation of Brave and the Bold. Now, Christina was known for writing Bumblebee, which I like by the way, I think it's the best live action Transformers. However, she also saw the Flash film and Birds of Prey. So already many fans are seeing red flags, especially since Andy Muschietti is directing, and he made Flash. I liked the first It film, but the second one wasn't as good, and I did hear good things about the Welcome to Derry Show.
The concern that the writer and director of the Flash film are making the DCU Batman film raises many red flags for fans. Like, after the Flash movie bombed, why did they still keep these guys? I would have replaced them with better writers and a director. I mean, I trust Matt Reeves with Batman, but with these two, I see some red flags in their film history, and Andy did defend Ezra Miller.
Now, look, I know many writers and directors have their fair share of good projects and bad ones. Some of them started out rough but got better later, and some started great but fell from grace.
He made Just Married, Cheaper by the Dozen, and the 2006 reboot of The Pink Panther. Those were bad films, but he later went on to make Night at the Museum Trilogy, Real Steel, Free Guy, Deadpool, and Wolverine, and of course, he's making a new Star Wars film called Starfighter. Shawn made some bad films in the beginning, but now he's one of the best directors out there because he tried again it worked out for him.
He made Boy, What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt for Wider People, Thor Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit. However, after that, his storytelling started to fall flat, like Love and Thunder was awful and poorly written, and it was the Batman and Robin of MCU films. He made Next Goals Wins, which got bad write-ups. To be honest, I don't think he's the right guy to make an Akira film. So Taika started out strong with his comedy and storytelling, but after Jojo Rabbit, he's fallen from grace.
Again, I like both directors, but to me, they show that a director/writer can start out great, then lose touch, while a director who was bad to begin with can grow and learn from it. Unless they don't see the errors of their ways and make up poor excuses for why people didn't like their project. Quick advice: if you get criticism for your work, whether it's good or bad, learn from it to see what you did right and what you did wrong. Acknowledge the criticism and don't demonize your fans for being passionate about your story.
Now, getting back to The Brave and The Bold, I am worried about the direction they are taking this film. I heard rumors that he may not end up directing, but the direction of where this film is going depends on what they do. I want this film to be a great Batman film with the Bat Family and a good father-son story with Bruce and Damian. However, it depends on how they make it, but I just don't want it to be a goofy Batman film because Batman does not work as a goofy film, like we don't want that we got it back in the 90s, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were too goofy and were bad films. I know Gunn has said he wants a dark, gritty Batman; he doesn't want him to be light-hearted. I don't want a goofy Batman in the DCU; I want to see a dark and serious Batman in this universe.
Most fans prefer a dark and gritty Batman over a light hearted Batman.
We shall see what they do, but yeah, I'm not keen on who they hired as the writer of the film, but hey, I could be wrong, and they might surprise us, like look at Fantastic 4 First Steps, and Thunderbolts didn't have much hope for those films, but I was proven wrong in the end. Still, I am concern on who they have chosen to direct and write but only time will tell if they do a good job or a bad job.
So that's my thoughts, what do you think? Do you think DCU is making a mistake, or are you going to wait and see what they do?
