Dallas Buyers Club Review
It's Pride Month, so here is my review of Dallas Buyers Club, based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a rodeo cowboy diagnosed with AIDS. Back in the 80s, people assumed only gay people got AIDS, but we all know people can get AIDS from unprotected sex of any kind or bad blood transfusions. There's even a scene where Ron remembers having sex with a hooker who had needle marks on her arm. That leads him to realize how he may have gotten it. He is shunned by his friends and told he has only 30 days to live. He doesn't believe it until he learns from Dr. Eve, played by Jennifer Garner, that Mexico has drugs not approved by the US government. So he goes to Mexico, gets the drugs, and decides to sell them with the help of a trans woman named Rayson, played by Jared Leto. They form the Dallas Buyers Club for LGBT people who have AIDS, as well as straight people, especially when Ron hooks up with a straight woman who has AIDS.
It's interesting when Ron went from hating gays to working with them and defending Rayson when someone refused to shake her hand. The film's cast is great, like Matthew McConaughey. I was shocked by how much weight he lost to play Ron Woodroof, and he did a fantastic job, as you feel for the guy. Even though AIDS is now more manageable, back then, you were going to die. Rayson, played by Jared Leto, was a good character who taught Ron not to judge anyone for who they are. One of the saddest moments is when she accepts her death, but she helps Ron by selling her life insurance with her dad. Rayson's death hits Ron so hard that he starts focusing on helping LGBT people instead of making money. At the end of the film, Ron dies seven years later, proving the doctors wrong, and since then, AIDS has become more treatable. It's a sad film, but overall it teaches us to show compassion to those and not to judge anyone by their sexuality.
The cast of the film did a great job, and Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto deserved their Oscars... even though Leto is a disgusting human being. Still a great film.
This movie was great, and it's a great LGBT film. I give Dallas Buyers Club an 8 out of 10.
Happy Pride Month to everyone!
