My Top Six Apu Episodes and My Thoughts on Apu Returning to The Simpsons.
Whether you view him as problematic, a stereotype, or not, you can't deny Apu is a great Simpsons character because he is more than meets the eye. The character has had some great episodes, good character development, and he made us all laugh.
After "The Problem with Apu," the Simpsons retired the character, and for nine years we didn't have Apu. Hank Azaria himself said he would never voice the character again because he saw how offended people were by his accent. However, that has all changed after the recent episode.
Last night, Apu returned, and this time he is voiced by Sunil Malhotra, and his wife, Manjula, is voiced by Janina Gavankar. I'll be honest: like everyone else, I was shocked when I heard this; they really kept it a secret. There were no rumors or anything like that. This shocked so many Simpsons fans that they brought back Apu, and they have more plans for him in the future.
I will be honest, I'm actually happy Apu is back, and I think this is what they should have done instead of getting rid of the character. They should have just recast the voice actor as they did with Carl, Dr. Hibbert, Kumiko, and many more. So yeah, I am happy to see Apu back on The Simpsons, and this episode was also a love letter to the character, like them saying, "We love this character, and he is part of Springfield." Matt Groening stood by the character, and they finally brought him back. So yeah, I'm happy to see Apu again. Even Homer was happy and told him no forgot him and everyone loves him in the episode from last night.
Now here are my top six best Apu episodes.
6. The Sweetest Apu.
This is the lowest episode because Apu has an affair with the squish lady, and Majula kicks him out. Homer and Marge are determined to get them back together, so Marge gets Majula to make a list of everything he can do to make it up to her. I find it so funny that Marge wants to go to the Golden Banana, a male strip club. Well, she is married to Homer after all. This episode has some funny moments, and Apu really does make it right with Majula. It's also funny how Homer walks away shocked when he sees Apu having an affair.
In this episode, Apu fears he will be deported unless he gets his citizenship, so Homer, who supported Proposition 42 to let undocumented immigrants out of Springfield, decides to help Apu get it after Lisa reasons with him. The episode is really funny, and Lisa tries to be the voice of reason, saying they shouldn't deport immigrants because everyone wants to start a new life in America, and that’s what America is, well, not right now. It's still a really funny episode, and it's sweet how the Simpsons help Apu get his citizenship and throw a party for him because, in the end, Homer does the right thing by helping his friend.
4. Eight Misbehavin
This episode is one of my favorites with Apu, when he and his wife want to have children. They try until they finally get pregnant, and Manjula gives birth to a healthy baby boy, whom Apu calls the jewel of their lives, until he learns Manjula gives birth to eight babies.
Like Apu, I would be shocked to know my wife gave birth to eight babies.
In the episode, Apu and Manjula struggle to raise their eight babies until a zoo owner offers to help, but he turns the babies into a show. Apu and Manjula hate it, so with Homer's help they save the babies, and the Zoo agrees to let them stay with their parents. Also, I find it funny how the babies are younger than Maggie, but in later episodes they are older than Maggie.
3. I'm with Cupid
This episode had Elton John guest star, and the whole episode is about the men in Springfield being mad at Apu because he's showering Manjula with so many gifts for Valentine's Day. They all decide to be mad at Apu because he's making them look bad. The episode has some funny moments, and when Elton John appears and meets the guys, it's funny; it turns out Apu didn't hire him, he just landed because his chandelier isn't working, and Apu's gift for Manjula is an airplane blowing smoke and spelling "love, you, Manjula." Of course, in the end, all the women of Springfield see it as their husbands saying they love them, especially with Homer and the roses.
This episode was a lot of fun, and who doesn't love Elton John?
2. Home and Apu
In this episode, Homer causes Apu to lose the Kwik-Mart, and Apu ends up living with the Simpsons, but he still wants the Kwik-Mart back, even after his musical number about who needs it. I also thought it was funny how Apu goes to the Simpsons, and it looks like he's going to strangle Homer, and Homer screams in horror, but it's actually an old Indian tradition of forgiveness. That would not fly today. Also, James Woods guest stars in this episode as the Kwik-Mart owner. With Homer's help, Apu eventually gets the Kwik-Mart back with the help of James Woods, and overall it's a funny episode with Apu and Homer, and who doesn’t love James Woods.
and the best Apu episode...
1. The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons
This is the best Apu episode, where Apu's arranged marriage is all set, but he doesn't want it because he likes being a bachelor. So he tells his mother he is married to Marge until she learns the truth and understands, but he's determined to go through with the wedding. There are some funny moments with Apu and Homer, especially when Homer dresses up Ganesha to stop the wedding.
This episode also had a sweet message because Apu sees Majuna and is stunned by her beauty, and he decides that marrying her won't be so bad. She also tells them they get divorced, and they both kiss and get married.
Overall, this episode was the best Apu episode because it shows his growth as a husband and father. As well it shows how much the Simpsons are always there for Apu and his family because they are family.
So that's my top six best Apu Episodes and
my thoughts on Apu returning to The Simpsons.
