Fantastic 4 First Steps Review
So, I saw Fantastic Four: First Steps, and here's my review of it. I liked it a lot, like I had a good time watching this film. This is undoubtedly the best Fantastic Four film by far, as we haven't had any good Fantastic Four films in the past.
The curse is lifted; we finally got a good Fantastic Four film that was well-written, faithful to Stan and Jack's work, and they did the characters right. I like the film's setting, with its 1960s vibes, and the action scenes were great, especially in one particular scene, and the visual effects are also impressive.
I had a great time with this film, and I had my doubts; like Thunderbolts, I was wrong about this one. Marvel Studios delivered a great movie, and it's a good thing they did those reshoots after the test screenings. One thing I did love about the film is that the team was already established, having been the Fantastic Four for about four years, and most of their villains are well-established.
Now, the cast of the film.
Perdo Pascal as Reed Richards. Now I was very mixed about this casting, as you know from past blogs. However, after seeing this film, Perdo did an excellent job, he was fantastic. He did an amazing job playing Mr. Fantastic, and despite those rumors, Reed is the leader of the Fantastic 4, and he's a well-written character who shows he's not giving up and always trying to solve his problems.
I look forward to seeing him as Mr. Fantastic in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. I know people are sick of Perdo, but he did a great job. He did have some moments were he was in doubt but overall I still thought the character was good.
Now, Vanesa Kirby did a great job playing Sue Storm. They finally got her right. I love how she essentially embodies a mother protecting her child and the world. She's a great mom in this film, and she will fight to keep her son safe. She's not like Cassie Lang or She-Hulk; she's a much better-written character and inspires many, including Sue, is the voice of reason for the Fantastic Four. So, they did a good job with Sue Storm and I love how they give us a proper Invisible Woman.
Additionally, Reed and Sue's relationship in the film was great, as these two have great chemistry. Reed and Sue are so well-written in this film and did a great job adapting their romance, unlike in previous films. Additionally, the love these two have for their son is evident, as the movie showcases how much they care for him and their commitment to keeping him safe.
Now, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch was great, like he was funny and cool. Also, he's still Johnny from the comics; he's a bad boy and a ladies' man too. I think Joseph was messing with people about what he said a few months ago about his character. They also make Johnny very smart in the film, and he had two scenes that made me laugh. I would love to see him work alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man. It would be so funny.
Now, Ebon, from what I wrote previously in past blogs. He is, without a doubt, the best casting, as he nailed it as The Thing. The Thing was fantastic, and he was funny in the movie; they got Ben Grimm right, although they didn't explore how he wants to be cured and be human again, which was skipped. They just wanted to establish what he is, and he's not ashamed of it, since it was already revealed in previous films.
However, overall, I loved Ebon's Thing, like it's like the comics, and Ebon just nailed it.
I love the scenes with Ben and Johnny, and the beard the Thing grows is funny.
They did a great job as Ben and Johnny in this film.
Now the Silver Surfer. I know many fans didn't like the idea of replacing Norrin Radd with Shala. I get it; I would rather they had done Norrin Radd or a different herald of Galactus, like Frankie Raye, aka Nova.
Nova would have been interesting; you could have explored her romance with Johnny Storm. However, despite this, I did like Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal. She did a great job playing the character, and the effects are better in the film than they were in the trailers. You do feel for the character and what she's gone through to serve Galactus.
I'm sure they will eventually introduce Norrin Radd as the Silver Surfer in the MCU, with a Silver Surfer project in the works. In the MCU universe, Norrin will become the Silver Surfer, and they could make Shalla the Nova of the MCU instead of another Silver Surfer. Lets face it fans want Norrin and I'm sure they will give us that.
Now, Galactus, I've got to tell ya, they finally gave us a proper Galactus who's not a giant storm cloud. He's also very intimidating and scary. Ralph Ineson does a fantastic job voicing Galactus, as if he gave Galactus a very sinister voice. I hope to see more of this guy in future projects.
The rest of the cast, including Paul Walter Hauser, Sarah Miles, Natasha Lyonne, and Mark Gatiss, all did a great job.
Marvel delivered a great Fantastic Four film, and I'm eager to see more. We finally got a good Fantastic 4 film, and it took 25 years to get it right. I liked this film a lot and give it an 8 out of 10. It's a good fresh start to the MCU, as they will be resetting after Secret Wars. I'm eager to see more from these films, and I'll write about what I'd like to see in the next one. There's also a mid-credits scene that sets up Avengers: Doomsday.
