Sleepy Hollow Review
Now, last year I did an Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad Review, so I'm going to review Tim Burton's take on Sleepy Hollow. This film was released in 1999 and did its own thing. Since Sleepy Hollow is in the public domain, you can do whatever you want with it. Now, what makes this version different from Washington Irving's is that this film has a more supernatural vibe to it.
Ichabod is a detective rather than a schoolteacher, and he's more the hero of the story. Unlike the old Disney film, he's actually more of a villain.
Katrina is also a more developed character and even helps Ichabod on the murders, she is not a spoiled rich girl and ends up with Ichabod. Also, Brom Bones in the film is more of a douche in the movie, and he only wants to marry Katrina for her family's wealth, and he does at one point.
The film is about the killings of the people of Sleepy Hollow by the Headless Horseman, who was a Hessian soldier hired during the Revolution. he was a deadly warrior until he was killed by the Americans. His head was removed, and he was buried in an unmarked grave. So Ichabod comes to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the murders, but he has to deal with his past life and try to find a way to get rid of the Headless Horseman.
In the film, the real main villain is not just the Headless Horseman, but also a character named Lady Mary Van Tassel, Katrina's stepmother. It's revealed that she is actually a witch and wants revenge on her family, as they killed her sister, accusing her of witchcraft, as they were both witnesses to the headless horseman's death. She even summons him to do her bidding, too.
The Headless Horseman in this film is terrifying, especially being played by Christopher Walken, as I found him scarier with his head on because they made Christopher Walken scary with his sharp teeth.
Overall, I enjoy this film, and it's a good take on the classic tale because it gives it a genuine supernatural feel. Having read or watched other Headless Horseman storylines, I can attest to this. It's been shown that Bron Bones was actually the Headless Horseman, and he was getting rid of Ichabod to be with Katherine.
I give Sleepy Hollow a 7 out of 10.
